Five Degrees of Creativity: Richard Demarco reviews five fantastic exhibitions…
“Before my experience of the Venice Biennale, I was heartened by the extraordinary effort made by The Caroline Wiseman Gallery to inject the dimension of the visual arts into an inspirational Aldeburgh world dominated by the musical genius of Benjamin Britten. I cannot forget the contribution made by Chris Wainwright who, together with a group of friends and artists associated with London’s University of the Arts, made his physical presence felt on the pebble beach dominated by one of Aldeburgh’s landmarks, The Outlook Tower, which became the centrifugal point around which Caroline Wiseman and her friends organized a life-enhancing programme of exhibitions, lectures, symposia and film showing the power of the visual arts to good effect.”

How coastal Suffolk became Britain's coolest cultural hub
“Meanwhile, on the Aldeburgh seafront, another project is taking off. London and Suffolk-based art dealer Caroline Wiseman has leased South Lookout, a small tower on the beach, and invites artists to come stay and be inspired. “Over the summer, there’ll be different things on every day: performances, book launches, plays and installations,” she says. Artist Ryan Gander, who lives in nearby Saxmundham, created a flag for the tower; his wife’s London gallery, Limoncello, will take up residence there later this year: and London-based Son Gallery will curate a show this month. Turner Prize-nominated Cathy de Monchaux intends to leave the capital for South Lookout for a few days every season.”

Art from the international avant-garde, from Britain and from Suffolk  comes to Aldeburgh during  the summer, starting with aldeburghART  in the last week of May.

Royal Academicians Peter Blake, Stephen Farthing, Anthony Green, Eileen Cooper and Nigel Hall are making specially commissioned works.  The international avant- garde artists Joseph Beuys and Marina Abramovic inspire performance art on the beach, guest curated by the legendary Richard Demarco. And during the Festival in June, Mat Collishaw and Ryan Gander, two  younger internationally acclaimed artists, are making works specially for the Aldeburgh Beach South Lookout.

Also planned are exhibitions, discussions, films and projects plus visits to private collections and studios, lunches, dinners and music, all relating in some way to visual art.

Building on the strong cultural heritage of Suffolk, aldeburghART’s  aim is to match and complement the profile of the Aldeburgh Festival, known internationally for its innovative and classical music.
