John Crossley began his career as a sculptor before transforming into a painter, as can be seen in the new work he has created as part of his residency at the Lookout. Responding to the architecture, the location and the unique structure of this building, Crossley observes and gathers material from which he extracts a concentrated relationship. Through the process of subtraction, amendment and re-positioning of forms, spaces and colours, he creates a new, personal, yet evocative edition of ‘ the Lookout experience’. He explores the emotive investment we might all have in the shapes, materials and colours that can be discovered when we take a closer look. The results are a collection of brilliant and exuberantly coloured paintings making a collection of beautiful objects that speak eloquently of the sense of the place.
